Total marks: 80 theory + 20 internal
Each main subject (Maths, Science, Social Science, the languages) is scored out of 100. The board exam at the end of the year carries 80 marks; the remaining 20 come from internal assessment during the session — periodic tests, the multiple assessment, a portfolio, and subject enrichment activities.
The 33% pass mark applies to the combined total, so internal assessment genuinely matters — but the 80-mark written paper is where the pattern below applies.
The five sections (A to E) of the 80-mark paper
The written paper is organised into five sections that step up in marks per question. The exact counts vary slightly by subject and year, but the shape is consistent:

Competency-based questions are ~50% of the paper
The biggest shift in recent years is weightage: around half the paper is now competency-focused — case-based, source-based, data-interpretation and situational questions that test whether you can apply a concept, not just recall it. Objective questions (MCQ, assertion–reason) and short/long answers make up the rest.
Practically, that means rote learning alone won't clear the paper. Section E (case-based) and the higher-order parts of Sections C and D reward students who have practised applying concepts to unseen situations.
